Let s get started& , Z6 Who We Are ,MISSION The mission of Calgary Seniors Resource Society is to: "Enhance the quality of life and human dignity of seniors, by supporting their independence through home services and community based programs." VISION Our vision is to be a leading agency in the community promoting and providing services which enhance the independence, quality of life, and human dignity of older adults. Don t stop now& 0< History On July 1, 1995 three organizations merged to create Calgary Seniors Resource Society. They were: The Senior Citizens Central Council of Calgary (SCCC), The Calgary Community Support Services for Seniors (CCSSS) and The Outreach Project for Eastern Core Seniors (OPECS). These organizations were started by Calgarians who recognized a pressing need in our community, and cared enough to do something about it. As Calgary's population of seniors grew, different solutions were required. All three organizations saw the value of collaboration in order to build the most effective organization. They found that they could do much more with their resources by merging to form Calgary Seniors' Resource Society. Their job is to connect clients with services which will help them live independently for as long as possible. CSRS Outreach Workers provide support, referrals, information and resources about everything from seniors benefits to housing and home care support. Seniors and their families can also call CSRS at any time for information on services and issues affecting seniors as part of our Information & Referral service. In 2006, CSRS Outreach Workers dealt primarily with the following issues: Social (5%); Physical Health (21%); Mental Health (7%); Financial (41%); Mobility (12%); Housing & Home Support (11%); Legal (3%) Click away& Z ,Outreach Jurisdiction zIn order to avoid duplication of service and ensure that funding is used in the most efficient way possible, FCSS (City of Calgary) divided the city into several geographical regions and assigned each one to specific senior serving agencies. The boundaries of these regions are currently under review, however historically CSRS Outreach Workers have been responsible for clients who live either in the downtown core or the Northeast quadrant of the city. This is not to say you can t call us if you or a senior you know lives in the Southwest. If we can t help you, we ll find out who can! That s our job. We encourage you to call our office at 266-6200. Bet your brain is starting to feel full& $ SeniorConnect SeniorConnect provides free education to community, service and youth groups, as well as businesses and individuals. Training takes less than an hour and teaches participants how to recognize the signs and symptoms that a senior may be at risk. Once trained, connectors also learn how to report their concerns via an anonymous 24/7 Seniors Help Line provided through our partnership with the Distress Centre. The following folks have all received SeniorConnect training: City of Calgary Police, Fire and EMS; ATCO meter readers; Enmax; Canada Post mail carriers; Rotary Clubs of Calgary; Lions Clubs of Calgary; Meals on Wheels; Pharmacists On Call; Various Community Associations & Centres You re doing super& 0 % SeniorConnect fIndividuals who have completed the SeniorConnect training are referred to as connectors. When a connector identifies a senior who may be at risk, they simply call the anonymous 24/7 Seniors Help Line to report their concern. An Outreach Worker from SeniorConnect is then contacted and gets in touch with the senior to see if they need assistance and are aware of the services and supports that are available for them. In emergency situations, Emergency Medical Services and/or police are contacted and they go immediately to the senior's home. Right this way& 44&# ' SeniorConnect 8RURAL EXPANSION SeniorConnect has been in operation for three years and is now expanding into the communities surrounding Calgary. The expansion of the SeniorConnect concept to communities surrounding Calgary will begin with those cities that are supported by the Distress Centre and move out from there. The first cities/communities will be Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks, Chestermere and Strathmore. If you are interested in bringing the program to your community, please give us a call and we'll help make it happen! You re eating this up& : c & SeniorConnect `YOUTH COMPONENT Just like seniors, youth are an integral part of our community. The education will be available to community youth groups, sports groups, youth church programs, classrooms, or any other youth organization that is interested in the training. The youth education & awareness component of the SeniorConnect program has been made possible through the generous support of TELUS.
