Volunteer Requirements

Calgary Seniors has a wide variety of volunteer opportunities that fit any schedule. For a full description of all of our programs please see our programs page.

Although all of our positions have slightly different requirements it is necessary that all of our volunteers be 18 years or older, as we conduct a criminal record check to ensure the safety of our clients.

The requirements for each program are as follows:

Program Volunteer Criteria
Friendly Visiting
  • Volunteers must be available for a minimum of 1 hour per week and have the ability to travel to a seniors home (volunteers can identify which communities they are willing to volunteer in.)
  • Volunteers must be willing to commit to weekly visits for a minimum of six months. (Unless the volunteer or senior have a problem with the match, in which case it will be closed by Calgary Seniors staff immediately.)
Assisted Shopping
  • Volunteers must be available 3-4 hours every two weeks and have a vehicle that can safely transport a senior client. (Volunteers can identify which communities they are willing to volunteer in.)
  • Volunteers must be able to demonstrate that they have a minimum of $1 million liability insurance and 3rd party coverage, although we strongly suggest all volunteers have a policy with $2 million coverage.
  • Volunteers must be willing to commit to shopping trips once every two weeks for a minimum of six months. (Unless the volunteer or senior have a problem with the match, in which case it will be closed by Calgary Seniors staff immediately.)
Telephone Reassurance
  • Volunteers must have access to a phone and the ability to call their senior at a predetermined time and predetermined intervals. There is no minimum time commitment for this program.
Escorted Transportation
  • Volunteers must be able to complete an average of 4 drives per month and have a vehicle that can safely transport a senior client.
  • Volunteers must be able to demonstrate that they have a minimum of $1 million liability insurance with 3rd party coverage, although we strongly suggest all volunteers have a policy with $2 million coverage.
  • Volunteers must be available during weekdays
Quick Mobilize Volunteer
  • Volunteers must be able to complete a minimum of 1 request per month and have a vehicle that can safely transport a senior client (if applicable)
  • Volunteers must be able to demonstrate that they have a minimum of $1 million liability insurance with 3rd party coverage, although we strongly suggest all volunteers have a policy with $2 million coverage.
  • Requests type and volume may vary every month. Volunteers must be open to flexibility in time and request types.
Pet Assist
  • Volunteers must be available 1-2 hours per week and have ability to travel to a seniors’ home (volunteers can identify which communities they are willing to volunteer in)
  • Volunteers must be willing to commit to weekly visits for a minimum of six months. (Unless the volunteer or senior have a problem with the match, in which case it will be closed be Calgary Seniors staff immediately.)
  • A love for animals
Volunteer Respite
  • Volunteers must be able to provide 4 hours of respite care per week (dependent on needs of the senior pair)
  • Previous experience in the human services field is an asset

All of our volunteers benefit from the relationships they build with the wonderful people they meet through our programs. We also provide:

  • Awards for outstanding volunteers
  • We reimburse Escorted Transportation drivers at a rate of 46¢/km or offer them a charitable tax receipt at 53¢/km for their contribution. Assisted Shopping drivers receive Charitable tax receipts for the driving they do for our program.
